Farmakologi omfatter alt, hvad der vedrører lægemidlers oprindelse, fremstilling, forhandling, fysisk-kemiske og biologiske egenskaber, herunder påvirkning af sygdomsprocesser hos dyr og mennesker. Fremstilling og forhandling henregnes almindeligvis til farmacien, således at farmakologien i snævrere forstand omfatter undersøgelser over lægemidlers anvendelse i sygdomsbehandlingen (farmakoterapi).
